This mortar and pestle is made of soapstone, a soft rock that is present in specific regions of Tamil Nadu. Once the rock is mined, each piece is carried back to the artisans house on cycles, where each stone is made into different cookwares such as Cookpots, Kadais, Dosa Kal etc.
This mortar pestle does not have to be seasoned. It can be used on purchase after a thorough wash. It can be used for all domestic kitchen purposes such as mashing ginger, garlic, pounding spices etc.
